Bourgogne Chardonnay Réserve 1998/2000, Pierre André This generic white wine can more than hold its own with many a classed product from the area.

Pouilly Loché, Les Franières 1998, Pierre André We can never buy enough of this classy white wine from the Mâcon region, redolent of springtime blossoms and always retaining its harmony.

Savigny-les-Beaune, Le Champier 1996, Pierre André, Aloxe-Corton The Savigny Blanc is similar in style to a Pemand-Vergelesses, but with a little more finesse.

Saint Aubin ler Cru Les Anges 1999, Pierre André A rounded and soft Chardonnay, offering a beautiful harmonious bouquet of pear, peach and a touch of honey.

Chablis "Le Grand Pré " 2000, Pierre André An excellent basic Chablis at a good price for this expensive region, whence all white wines exhibit the unique minerally hints that distinguish them from their more southerly cousins.

Chablis ler Cru Côte De Lechet 1999, Pierre André Intense nose with aromas of butter, jasmine, freesia and spices. Powerful and harmonious with a notable freshness.

Ladoix, Le Rognet 1996, Pierre André, Aloxe-Corton The Rognet is grown about 100 metres below the famous Grand Cru vineyard Corton Charlemagne and has some of its forthright character

Meursault Cuvée Lopin 1997, Hospices de Beaune From one of the Côte de Beaune's most famous villages, this white wine has all the nutty fruitiness of a classic Meursault from a wonderful year. Drink now or keep for many years, the sensual thrill will not diminish.

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 1997, Pierre André, Aloxe-Corton The Corton Charlemagne itself is a wonderful rich white wine full of spices and honeyed fruits with the 1997 already being approachable - a beautiful example. Considered by many to be the equal of any white wine produced anywhere in the world, but cheaper than those rivals.

SOUTHERN RHÔNE WHITE WINE

Coteaux du Tricastin, La Ferette 2000, Gabriel Liogier Fresh, lively and with plenty of flavour. Marvellous value.

DRY WHITE WINE BORDEAUX

Château Bauduc Blanc Sec 2000, Bordeaux Dry Sauvignon blended with a touch of Semillon gives fresh fruit character to this fine example of traditional old-world subtlety at a silly price.

LOIRE WHITE WINE

These are fresh white wines from the Loire, each characteristic of its origins. Balland-Chapuis is one of the region's oldest producing houses, with a pedigree longer than your arm. Two of their white wines received the rare five-star rating in a Decanter magazine tasting of Loire white wines.

Coteaux du Giennois 2001, Domaine Balland-Chapuis The Coteaux du Giennois is a gold medal winning wine in this vintage and is far superior to many a Sancerre.

Sancerre "Le Chatillet" 1998/2001, Domaine Balland-Chapuis The Sancerre from Balland-Chapuis is a well-made example of a classic white wine. This wine is a lovely, mellow Sancerre typical of both these excellent vintages for Loire wines.

Nothing is simple about the white wines of the Domaine of Prince Philippe-Poniatowski. History shows that the best vignerons of Vouvray have always made great wines with the Chenin grape. Touraine has a slightly kinder climate than Britain, which is why it has been described as the "garden of France".

Aigle Blanc 1986, Vouvray This first white wine is relatively dry and is delicious with fish, chicken and pork dishes.

Aigle Blanc Vin de Tris 1990, Vouvray Moelleaux Hot summers bring fabulous rich moelleux wines comparable with great Sauternes and Trockenbeerenauslese.

Tokay Pinot Gris Schloesselreben Vieille Vignes 1994 From an unusual white grape variety, this deep, slightly smoky white wine is utterly charming and will bowl over your guests if served with any fish or vegetarian meal.
